Trunyan is Bali’s best known Bali Aga village. Bali Aga refers to the pre-Hindu animistic beliefs of the Balinese, which religion and culture is only practiced in a few remote villages today. It is believed that an ancient Taru Menyan tree stood on the spot where the village was founded, thus the name Trunyan.

Your guide will intrigue you with secrets about the village, its traditions and its history. The oldest and largest statue in Bali is hidden in the temple here, and no westerner has yet had a glimpse of it!

This trek through historical times and tales will lead you up the precipitous crater wall on the eastern shore of Lake Batur. The view from the top reveals the sunrise behind Mount Rinjani on Lombok, shedding light on the villages, lake, mountains and the sea surrounding Bali’s eastern shore.

Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall, but the land? The land remains. This is true and very visible in the Tabanan regency of Bali, which has historically been plagued by wars, assassinations, and outcaste marriages between royal families. A turning point came during Dutch invasion when the crown King and Prince committed suicide while in captivity, and the surviving royal family members of this region where exiled to Lombok.

Although the Dutch tried to restore Bali’s Kingdoms in 1929, by 1950 Indonesia’s royalty was abolished with a stroke of a pen by Sukarno. The absence of royalty turned the Penebel and Jatiluwih area into farmland, and this land has remained the land of the farmers until today producing most of Bali’s rice.

at the riverHiking from Penebel to Jatiluwih is really peaceful and beautiful, being a cultural heritage site means that the villagers here get to preserve the area from over development and pollution. The air and water is clean, offering the opportunity to wash your hands or take a little splash in the clean rivers. This trek will take you over bridges and through the forest past the Besi Kalung (Iron Necklace) Temple, where offerings are made to Dewi Sri the goddess of rice, right into the heart of the farming community.

It’s interesting to see the Dutch inspired canal irrigation systems and the Petakut (Scarecrows) that the farmers make to protect their crops. As the wind blows a tinkling sound can be heard from the tins, tied up in a straight line, with seeds or stones inside them, yet another method to protect the crops from the birdlife in this agricultural odyssey.

A Farm ViewTo see the best rice paddy view in Bali and experience the tranquil ambiance of Balinese farming, we offer a day hiking trip or, incase you would like to get away from all the action elsewhere, we have an over night stay option at the Taman Sari.

Book your tour online right now for this unique travel experience into the royalty deserted region of Tabanan, where every farmer is king of his own crop!
